Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille journey has come to an abrupt end, with the club confirming his departure by mutual consent after a challenging run of results.
The Italian tactician exits following a humiliating 5–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and a damaging 3–0 loss to Club Brugge that sealed Marseille’s Champions League elimination.
While last season saw promise — as De Zerbi guided the club to an impressive second-place finish in Ligue 1 after arriving from Brighton in the summer of 2024 — this campaign has told a different story.
Marseille currently sit fourth in the French top flight, trailing leaders PSG by 12 points, and the pressure had clearly intensified in recent weeks.
In an official statement, the club described the decision as a “difficult collective choice” made after discussions between the owner, president, sporting director, and De Zerbi himself. The aim, they said, was to act in the best interests of the club ahead of the season’s decisive stretch.
Another major managerial position is now open in European football — and the speculation about De Zerbi’s next move starts immediately.
