Having seen her elder sisters Nneka, Olivia and Chiney chose to represent the United States, Erica Ogwumike has revealed her intention to represent Nigeria in the basketball despite interest from USA. The United states born Erica, who was recently selected by the New York Liberty in the WNBA 2020 Draft as the 26th pick and traded to the Minnesota Lynx, is said to be excited about the possibility of playing alongside the Nigerian D'Tigress who are currently the best team in Africa after winning two back-to-back FIBA Women's AfroBasket titles.
In an Instagram live chat on Friday with Channels TV, Erica said: “I do want to play for the Nigerian team. “It will be an amazing opportunity. I want to experience what it is playing for a country with so much pride and custom.
She also revealed that having seen the D’Tigress made up of great crop of talents and have been in a great run of form as they already booked a place to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. And the 22-year old hope she would bring her own vast experiences into the team.
She went ahead to explain: “I think I will just be able to bring energy and scoring abilities to that team that already has much of it which is so awesome. “Being the youngest of all (in her family), I have learned how to work on a team, work with people, and communicate. I think I could potentially be an asset to the team.
Meanwhile, Erica is currently completing an Anatomy Class "just for fun" that she enrolled for at Rice University where she graduated last year. This is one of many decisions to show that she indeed chose to take a different path than her sisters who attended Stanford University. She also explained that playing basketball and studying medicine has not exactly been a walk in the park but hers’ is a story of determination and hard work that have spelled her journey thus far.
